13 & 14 September 2025
Description
From the 16th century there were ‘sweet’ bags for the ladies, which were like lavender bags, made of a variety of available herbs to scent their handkerchiefs, and to disguise foul smelling odours from the privy and the street. During the 17th Century, wealthy aristocrats would commission ateliers to create highly ornate little bags or purses referred to as ‘sweet bags’. These bags were incredibly intricate, hand stitched masterpieces, embellished with threads made from precious metals, gems and all manner of expensive materials.
